Down the Well
A satiric workplace mystery aimed at bully culture
Customer service manager Meri Goldsmith is kind, detail-oriented, and loves to solve problems for customers at the Boston-area kitchen store where she works. On the morning after a contentious election, with everyone so angry that it feels like pieces of sky are falling and shattering on the ground around her, Meri finds refuge in her meticulously maintained files and their small, solvable problems. This strategy works until her boss, Rowdy Jones, shows up. His guy won—bigly. Let the rumpus begin.
On the prowl for “suspicious” activity, Rowdy chases a customer from the store for shopping while Brown and doesn’t return. At least, not until after his disappearance gets national news coverage and ignites controversy. With Rowdy back, the store spins into chaos. There’s a murder. The customer service files are decimated. And clearly, at least to Meri, Rowdy is involved. But the boys’ club in the c-suite has Rowdy’s back, and holding him responsible is a problem Meri can’t fix alone. To restore hope (and get her files back in order), she’ll need to cut through the noise of grievance culture and lean on her diverse community of friends and colleagues.
